Forty per cent of the tomatoes
harvested in the European Union in 2022 were picked in Italy,
according to Eurostat data published on Monday.
Spain and Portugal trailed in second and third place at 24% and
9% respectively.
Across the bloc, fresh vegetables were grown on a total of two
million hectares of land, which collectively yielded 59.8
million tonnes of crops.
The three most grown fresh vegetables were tomatoes, with 15.4
million tonnes of harvested production, onions (6.2 million
tonnes) and carrots (4.4 million tonnes).
