A school near Milan has given its
pupils the day off on April 10, the end of the Muslim holy month
of fasting Ramadan, sparking a row and even death threats
against the head.
The high school, the Istituto Comprensivo Iqbal Masiq at
Pioltello, has 40% of Muslim students.
The head, Alessandro Fanfoni, said on social media Monday "I'm
afraid and I don't feel like talking about the case in public at
the moment".
The rightwing League party said it was "more worried about the
remaining 60% of students at Pioltello who are not Muslim".
The local mayor, Ivonne Cosciotti, whose community has a 20%
minority of foreign-born citizens, said "closing the school is
an act of civility".
The anti-migrant League replied that "it is not a civilised act
but one of intolerance".
