A school near Milan that is at the
centre of controversy for deciding to give its 40% Muslim
students the day off at the end of Ramadan on April 10 on
Tuesday called for its choice to be respected after its board
confirmed it on Monday.
The decision by the Iqbal Masih Comprehensive Institute in
Pioltello caused an uproar, with the head teacher getting death
threats from right-wingers on the Web.
The Lombardy regional school office last week said the decision
was irregular and urged it to rethink the move.
But the school board has struck to its guns and on Tuesday it
called for "respect for a choice that came spontaneously from
within us, on the basis of reasons that we believe to be
consistent with the right to education and with the Italian
Constitution".
