The nephew of a noted Puglia crime
boss was gunned down in Bari Monday night.
Raffaelle 'Lello' Capriati, nephew of Bari Vecchia clan leader
Toino Capriati, was hit with three shots to the head and one in
the back in an execution-like killing by a hitman on a
motorbike, police said.
The victim, 39, was released from prison in August 2022 after
serving a 17-year sentence for the murder of 16-year-old Michele
Fazio, killed by mistake in a mafia blood feud on July 2001.
Tonino Capriati, one of 14 Bari clan chiefs, has been in the
news lately after Puglia Governor Michele Emiliano said he had
taken Mayor Antonio Decaro to the mobsters' sister and
'entrusted' him to her when Decaro was a councillor in
Emiliano's previous city administration.
After Decaro denied the episode, Emiliano said he had in fact
misrembered it and Decaro had not gone to see Capriati's sister
with him.
Decaro, who has been under police protection from the mafia for
the last eight years, is awaiting interior ministry inspectors
who may recommend dissolving the council for mafia infiltration
after 130 people were recently arrested in a local transport and
vote buying probe.
