One worker is dead and two others seriously injured after an accident at excavations for a new Naples metro line on Wednesday, the latest in a spate of fatal workplace accidents in Italy.
    The victim was named as 63 year old Antonio Russo, from Giugliano in Campania.
    He was due to retire in September.
    A 54-year-old worker suffered concussion and is unconscious. He is in the Ospedale del Mare Hospital in code red.
    The other injured man is a 59-year-old, now in shock, who suffered severe bruising to a leg and is in the Cardarelli Hospital in code red.
    The workers were engulfed when earth gave way du,ring work on the line between Capodichino, where the city airport is, and Poggioreale, where one of its prisons is.
    It is the latest in a long string of fatal workplace accidents in Italy that has spurred union protests.
    Five men died after inhaling toxic gas in a sewer network near Palermo earlier this month, and seven died in a hydro power plant blast near Bologna last month.
