Italy's main prison warder union on
Monday sounded the alarm over a record number of suicides among
inmates and guards in the first half of this year.
"In the prison of Paola, in the province of Cosenza, another
inmate has taken his own life: this is the 51st suicide in six
months. The State has now raised the white flag," said the
Secretary of the Prison Police Union (SPP), Aldo Di Giacomo.
"Added to this suicide is that of a prison policeman yesterday,
the fifth among officers since the beginning of 2024.
"There have never been so many suicides in the first six months
since the beginning of a new year, neither among officers nor
among prisoners: it is a negative record that unites them,
because they have been completely forgotten by the State".
