A reported 250,000 substitute teachers will be working this year to fill vacant spots in Italy's schools but, as the school year is set to start in less than 15 days, 519 new school principals could be left without a job after Lazio's regional administrative court TAR suspended their appointment after they won a national competition.
The education ministry will request the annulment of the decision, according to well-informed sources, after publishing the results of the public bid on August 9, with the objective of assigning the vacant spots to the competition's winners on September 1.
The suspension regarding the new school principals will remain in place at least until September 5, when TAR is set to reconvene for a decision.
Italy's school year will begin on different days depending on the region, starting on September 5 in the autonomous province of Bolzano.
The public selection of the new school principals, which was completed at the beginning of July, was organized under a measure passed by Parliament to end ongoing judicial appeals against an ordinary public tender organized in 2017.
