A four-year-old girl died after falling from a balcony of the apartment in Bologna where she lived with her family.
Early reports late on Monday said the girl's mother and her sister, who is just a few months old, were at home at the time of the accident.
The 118 emergency medical service took her to hospital where she later died of her injuries.
Police sources said the fall was the result of a tragic accident.
In the recent past, a number of children have fallen off balconies in non-fatal accidents registered in the Emilia Romagna region where Bologna is located.
On May 31, a three-year-old fell from his second-floor balcony, without reporting serious injuries.
On April 6, a nine-year-old girl was seriously injured, also after falling from a balcony, and on the same day another girl aged four survived a fall from the fourth-floor balcony of her apartment in Modena.
