A man suspected of the brutal murder
of two women in Melbourne, Australia, in 1977 has been detained
in Rome on an international arrest warrant, sources said on
Saturday.
The 65-year-old suspect, who has Greek and Australian
citizenship, was detained at the city's Fiumicino airport on
Thursday after landing on a flight from Greece, where he was
living, for a holiday in Italy, the sources said.
He is accused of killing friends Suzanne Armstrong, 27, and
Susan Bartlett, 28, in a frenzied knife attack that shocked
Australia.
New technology led to a breakthrough in the cold case and the
suspect became a fugitive of Australian justice after a request
was made for a sample of his DNA in 2017, the sources said.
