Municipal police on Monday
sequestrated the subsoil of the archaeological area of Tor
Fiscale in east Rome after investigations revealed a massive
illegal dumpsite below ground.
Local businesses are alleged to have used the underground
tunnels and chambers of the second and third century AD
catacombs to dispose of industrial waste and empty oil tanks,
among other refuse.
The municipal police discovered the site as a result of
investigations into illegal car scrapyards and an illegal
special waste disposal racket.
Drones were used in the probe.
