A trade union acting for the Verona
Arena orchestra on Tuesday accused Spanish super tenor and opera
conductor Placido Domingo of presiding over two flops in singing
in Aida and La Traviata at the ancient Roman amphitheatre and
iconic music venue on August 25 and 26.
SLC CGIL further accused the 81-year-old Domingo of a "mediocre"
performance in conducting Turandot the following night.
"In Turandot," the CGIL wrote to Arena Foundation, "all the
orchestra players felt abandoned to their own devices, risking
on more than one occasion to all fall on their faces.
"At the end there was a protest from the orchestra which, aware
of the mediocrity of the show, refused to stand up at the
gesture of the conductor".
Spaniard Domingo, who faces multiple sexual harassment
allegations from female former colleagues dating back to 2019,
is one of the world's greatest tenors and was part of the Three
Tenors with countryman José Carreras and the late Italian
superstar tenor Luciano Pavarotti.
