Flyover Zone has released a newly remastered edition of its 27-year-old virtual aerial tour of ancient Rome as it appeared at the height of its urban development in the fourth century AD.
Rome Reborn 4.0 uses updated graphics, time warps and 3D models to allow users to better experience the Colosseum, the Pantheon, the Mausoleum of Augustus, the Basilica of Maxentius, the imperial palaces, and the temples and monuments on the Capitoline Hill as they looked in 320 AD, just a few years before Constantine moved the capital of the Roman Empire to Constantinople.
Developed by Professor Bernard Frischer, an expert on the archaeology of Rome and its environs, and Flyover Zone starting 1997, the tour is available in English as an App or online at Yourescape.
"The dream of reconstructing Rome is an old one," said Frischer.
"The idea came to me when I first saw Italo Gismondi's model in Rome at the Museum of Roman Civilisation in EUR, built between 1935 and 1971. Today Rome Reborn 4.0 is the culmination of more than 27 years of historical research applied to the use of innovative digital tools. With the virtual tour Flight Over Ancient Rome we hope to make it easy and fun for people to learn about ancient Rome and its cultural heritage," he continued.
"Teachers can use this and 14 other tours on Yorescape to take their students on virtual tours of the cultures they are studying. History buffs can explore great historical sites without having to leave home. Yorescape can also help tourists prepare for their trip to Rome, deepening their knowledge of the places they are going to visit and keeping their memories alive once they return home," said Fischer.
"Our aim is not to replace real tourism, but to improve it," he concluded.
