2023 was a record year for entries
into Italian museums with the Colosseum and the Pantheon in Rome
leading the rankings, according to figures presented at the
culture ministry Wednesday.
In all some 58 million people entered Italy's museums last year,
just over a million less than the Italian population.
This was up 10.7 million on 2022, a rise of 23% in visitor
numbers.
It was 2.4 million higher than the pre-pandemic year of 2018.
The Colosseum had over 12 million visitors, followed by the
Pantheon with over five million, a number that is now falling
due to a new entry fee at the temple of all the gods.
The Uffizi Gallery was third, followed by Pompeii, Florence's
Accademia Gallery (home to Michelangelo's David), Castel
Sant'Angelo, the Egyptian Museum of Turin, the Reggia di
Caserta, Hadrian's Villa and Villa d'Este at Tivoli, and the
Vittoriano and Palazzo Venezia.
