Air pollution caused by the
presence of cruise liners in the waters around Venice is falling
despite an increase in their size and number, the national
research centre (CNR) said Thursday.
The reduction is due to the use of green fuel, added CNR.
The findings are contained in a study conducted in
conjunction with the University Ca' Foscari and published in the
magazine Atmospheric Environment'.
"The impact of passenger traffic on the concentration of
atmospheric particles in the Venice area is falling thanks to
the use of green fuel," the study said.
Local and national authorities have both expressed concern
about the presence of crusie liners around the lagoon city,
accusing them of causing structural damage to fragile buildings
and of harming the delicate ecosystem.
