An exhibition on gladiators, heroes of the Colosseum was inaugurated at the Museum of Civilisation of Quebec by the Consul General of Italy in Montreal, Enrico Pavone, together with the deputy mayor, Catherine Vallieres Roland.
The heroic image of the gladiator, as it is usually presented to us, forced to fight and often die in the arena by the ferocious and tyrannical will of despotic emperors, in front of bloodthirsty spectators, still exerts a considerable fascination on mankind.
Featuring a spectacular set design, each section of the exhibition is designed to tell the story of two protagonists, intertwined by fate: the gladiators and the Colosseum, that colossal and complex structure that was the stage on which their fate was determined.
The exhibition aims to illustrate this compelling and fascinating world in its myriad of complexities. Traditional exhibition methods, such as the display of original objects from prestigious Italian museums such as the National Archaeological Museum in Naples, the Archaeological Park of Paestum or the National Roman Museum in Rome, never before exhibited outside Italy, are combined with modern replicas based on rigorous scientific documentation, state-of-the-art interactive technologies, striking graphics and other multimedia devices and applications.
Archaeologists Rossella Rea and Federica Rinaldi, Sara Colantonio and Carlotta Caruso from the National Roman Museum collaborated on the exhibition, which was conceived and directed by 'Contemporanea Progetti' and will remain open until 22 September.
