Within the framework of the first Day of Italian Sport in the World promoted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, the Embassy of Italy in Washington and the network of Italian Consulates in the United States will launch a series of initiatives throughout the United States with the aim of promoting Italian sport and its values.
In this context, the Embassy of Italy in Washington intends to promote a number of initiatives dedicated to cycling and our country's cycling tradition. Today, a group of about 40 diplomats and embassy officials, as well as representatives of the Italian community in Washington, brought the tricolour to the streets of the American capital by participating in the eighth edition of the 'DC Bike Ride', an important Washingtonian sporting event. On Tuesday, 10 September, the Ambassador of Italy to the United States, Mariangela Zappia, will host at the Embassy the event "The Giro d'Italia and the endless discovery of Italy", with the participation of the Olympic champion Paolo Bettini and, in video link-up, the last winner of the Giro d'Italia Elisa Longo Borghini. The event will also be an opportunity to present to the American public the Giro d'Italia, an iconic sporting event that is becoming increasingly well-known throughout the world, and which represents an extraordinary testimonial of our country and the richness of its territories.
In addition, over the next week, the Embassy, in collaboration with RCS Sport - Giro d'Italia, Castelli Cycling and BKool, will launch a competition on social media, dedicated to the American public, to win a trip to Italy to watch the Giro d'Italia and gadgets of the Giro.
The first edition of Giornata dello Sport Italiano in the United States is an example of sports diplomacy as an essential element of the Government's strategy to promote Italy around the world.
