From 14 to 20 October 2024 the Italian Embassy in Bulgaria will celebrate, in cooperation with the Italian Cultural Institute of Sofia (IIC), the 24th edition of the Settimana della Lingua Italiana nel Mondo (SLIM), the annual international event organised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation with the diplomatic network abroad under the High Patronage of the President of the Republic. The theme envisaged for this year, entitled 'Italian and the Book: the world between the lines', aims to explore the connection between language and literature in the contemporary world, while at the same time highlighting the role of the book as a vehicle for Italy's cultural heritage, values and identity.
The celebrations for SLIM 2024 in Sofia will officially open on 10 October with the presentation of the film 'Parthenope' by Paolo Sorrentino by the IIC in cooperation with the Film and Literature Festival 'Cinelibri'. The screening will take place at 7 p.m. in Room 1 of the National Palace of Culture in Sofia. The film recounts the life of the protagonist Parthenope, namesake of the ancient city that was the ancestor of Naples, in a story set between 1950 and the present day.
The series of events will continue on 16 October at 11 a.m. in the New Conference Hall of Sofia University 'St. Clement of Ohrid' with a project curated by Italian actor, playwright and theatre director Massimiliano Finazzer Flory. The project involves a cycle of theatrical readings in Italian of excerpts from Alessandro Manzoni's 'I Promessi Sposi' with musical accompaniment by violinist Matteo Fedeli. The event is the result of the collaboration of the Embassy of Italy in Bulgaria with the IIC Sofia, the Embassy of Switzerland in Bulgaria, and the University of St. Clement of Ohrid.
On 18 October, at 7 p.m., the Sala Lumière will host a meeting with the well-known director Daniele Luchetti, guest of honour of the "Cinelibri" Festival. Luchetti will introduce the film 'Confidenza', based on the novel by the famous Neapolitan writer Domenico Starnone. The work centres on the relationship between Pietro, a literature professor, and Teresa, his ex-student, who decide to tell each other an unmentionable secret. Shaken by Pietro's secret, Teresa withdraws, disappearing for a year. In the meantime, the professor marries another woman, while returning in his mind to Teresa, and to that confidence which, if revealed, could ruin his life.
The other Italian-produced films of SLIM 2024 represent the best that Italian cinema has produced this past season in the field of film adaptations and will also be screened in the cities of Plovdiv, Varna, Burgas, Veliko Tarnovo, Gabrovo and Stara Zagora until 3 November: "Dieci minuti" by Maria Sole Tognazzi; "Romeo is Juliet" by Giovanni Veronesi; "La vita accanto" by Marco Tullio Giordana; "Diva Futura" by Giulia Louise Steigerwalt; "Eterno Visionario" by Michele Placido; "Iddu - L'ultimo Padrino" by Fabio Grassadonia and Fabio Piazza.
