The Italian Embassy in Ecuador celebrated the success of the 'Amazonia sin Fuego' programme on the occasion of the project's 25th anniversary commemoration. The Italian cooperation programme "Amazonia sin Fuego" for the prevention and control of forest fires in the Amazon region started in 1999 in Brazil. After a period also in Bolivia, since 2017 it has arrived in Ecuador, thanks to the collaboration of the Italian-Ecuadorian Fund for Sustainable Development (Fieds).
During an event held in Quito, the Italian ambassador to Ecuador, Giovanni Davoli, underlined the results obtained by the programme in its first phase: 65% reduction in fires. He also indicated that Italy's commitment on the issue alongside Ecuador will continue with new initiatives. He then recalled that, following the fires with a possible terrorist matrix that struck Quito a few weeks ago, General Andrea Rispoli, commander of the Carabinieri's forestry, environmental and agri-food units, visited the Ecuadorian capital and made himself available to the local authorities for a new training project on fire prevention and control, with the support of Fieds and the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS). The event was also attended by Ecuador's Deputy Minister of the Environment, Maria Cristina Recalde, the Undersecretary for Economic Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Francisco Salgado, and Dr. Pietro Graziani from the AICS office in Bogotá.
