The inaugural event of the Italian language courses organised by the Italian Embassy was held yesterday at the Casa degli Italiani in Asmara. The event took place in the presence of several members of the Eritrean government and ruling party, including Minister of Foreign Affairs Osman Saleh, Minister of Information Yemane Gebremeskel, Minister of Agriculture Arefaine Berhe, Acting Minister of Education Petros Hailemariam the Director General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Ibrahim Osman and the Head of Political Affairs Yemane Gebreab, a sign of the great attention paid to our language by the Eritrean authorities, as well as in the presence of the diplomatic corps and representatives of the Italian community in Asmara.
This was the occasion to celebrate the start of the Italian courses, which were restarted a few weeks ago at the House of Italians in Asmara thanks to the cooperation of the Directorate General for Public and Cultural Diplomacy of our Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Dante Alighieri Society, represented for the occasion by the director general of the Dante Alighieri Association Italian Schools Worldwide (Adasim), Emilio Luzi. Thanks to the passion and dedication of some volunteer Italian-Eritrean teachers, the initiative, strongly supported by the Italian ambassador Marco Mancini, is enabling hundreds of Eritrean students to return to study Italian in Asmara for the first time in several years, with the aim of expanding and structuring the educational offer in the near future.
"Language is not only a communication tool, but also the gateway to social and professional growth, especially in today's interconnected world," said the ambassador, also recalling the value of the Italian language as a vehicle for "soft diplomacy", before proceeding to the symbolic ribbon-cutting ceremony with the Eritrean foreign minister and the director general of the Dante Alighieri Society.
