The second phase of the 'Sigue Aprendiendo Más' (Continue Learning More) project, an educational initiative aimed at public schools in the Dominican capital's suburbs and managed by 'ProMueve Rd - Italia', has kicked off in Santo Domingo.
The association linked to the Dominican diaspora in Italy has long been committed to promoting cultural ties between the two countries, and acted in this case in collaboration with the 'Fundación de Desarrollo Integral Casa de Refugio'(Fundicar).
The project receives funding from the Italian section of the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) under the 'A.Mi.Co. Grants' initiative, as well as from the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS).
The initiative aims to strengthen access to education for minors from difficult social contexts - such as the urban periphery of Santo Domingo Oeste - by assigning a central role to the teaching of the Italian language, as an emancipation tool to increase the employment opportunities of young people.
During the event, an appeal was launched to public institutions, the private sector, international organisations and individual donors, to raise further funds to ensure continuity and expand activities, starting in January 2025.
The event was held in the Juan Pablo Duarte Room of the Council of Municipal Councillors, at the Santo Domingo Oeste City Hall, and was attended by the Ambassador of Italy, Stefano Queirolo Palmas; the Mayor of Santo Domingo Oeste, Francisco Peña; the President of ProMueve Rd - Italy, Mirtha Racelis Mella; the President of Fundicar, Gisela Campusano; the Member of Parliament for the Overseas Constituency, Julio Cesar López; also present were the representatives of IOM Italy, Alessandro De Donato and Nelson Ndoye Malle; local councillors and representatives of other institutions, including the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the Ministry of Public Health of the Dominican Republic. At the end of the event, the traditional lighting of the Christmas tree in the Caobas Park took place, an occasion that opens the community's Christmas season, but also reflects the common commitment to the educational, social and cultural development of Santo Domingo Oeste.
