The Italian Ambassador to Lebanon, Fabrizio Marcelli, visited the historic Mar Mikhael railway station to assess updates on the restoration projects for this site that Italy shares with UNESCO.
The UN agency and Italy signed an agreement in 2023 for the restoration and recovery of the industrial heritage of the Beirut Railway Station, to which an initial Italian Cooperation funding of 2,000,000 euro has been allocated.
The Mar Mikhael Station, built in 1894, was abandoned during the civil war, and in 2020 was hit by explosions in Beirut's port. This project is part of a comprehensive intervention funded by Italy to preserve the industrial heritage of the old railway station and open the space to the public. The project aims to create a public green space in the station area for the benefit of Beirut's population and to preserve the original function of the site by offering an open space for artists to work and promote their products. The Mar Mikhael railway station, a unique industrial heritage site in the heart of Beirut, has enormous potential to become a space where citizens can enjoy social and cultural exchanges.
