The Ambassador of Italy, Paolo Trichilo, spoke in Zagreb at the Croatian premiere of the docufilm 'Mladen Machiedo - La quotidianità non ordinaria di un italianista croato' ('Mladen Machiedo - The non-ordinary everyday life of a Croatian Italianist'), which was recently presented at the 'Pordenonelegge' Festival and was also made with the contribution of the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region. He recalled the great contribution made by the Croatian academic, translator and poet to the dissemination of Italian literature in Croatia.
In addition to the Ambassador and Machiedo himself, the event was opened by the President of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts - of which Machiedo is a member - the Croatian Matrix (the well-known writer Miro Gavran), the oldest Croatian cultural institution, and the Croatian Community of Trieste.
Born in Zagreb in 1938, Machiedo graduated in 1961 with a degree in Italian Language and Literature from the capital's University, where he later pursued an academic career, eventually taking over the chair of Italian Literature in 1984. Machiedo is known for having personally known, corresponded with and translated into Croatian works by important Italian authors, including Montale, Calvino and Pasolini, as well as for his lectures at Italian universities (Florence, Pisa, Padua, Udine, Trieste).
