Italy's hospital doctors on Friday
urgently appealed to the government to lay on more money and
staff to avert what they called a "health Caporetto", a national
catastrophe named after a crushing WWI defeat to the Austrians.
"We need money and staff to get out of the emergency," said the
hospital doctors largest trade union, Anaao Assomed.
They proposed a five-point plan: entrust vaccines and swabs to
the 50,000 doctors getting their specializations; pension-age
staff volunteering to stay on; opening up to foreign doctors;
recognizing idemnities; and involving the private sector more.
