Conservative Brothers of Italy (FdI) leader Giorgia Meloni, on track to becoming Italy's first woman premier, on Monday congratulated former British foreign minister Liz Truss as her election as British Conservative Party leader and thus Britain's third woman premier after Margaret Thatcher and Theresa May.
"Congratulations to Lizz Truss, new leader of the British Conservative party and prime minister of the United Kingdom," said Meloni, whose Brothers of Italy (FdI) party is spearheading a centre right win in the September 25 general election according to all polls, and who is also chair of the European Conservatives and Reformists Party at the European Parliament.

The British Tories were a founding member of that caucus in 2009, with then Tory leader David Cameron a driving force behind its creation, but left the group after Brexit.
Meloni added: "The Tories are among the founders of the family of European Conservatives I have the honour of chairing and I am certain that, together with them, it will be possible to boost our already strong political and cultural collaboration".
The ECR includes Poland's Law and Justice party, Spain's Vox and the Sweden Democrats party.
