Russia's Ambassador to Italy Serghey
Razov arrived at the foreign ministry in Rome on Monday after
being summoned to a meeting with ministry Secretary General
Ettore Sequi.
Razov has been summoned as part of an initiative Italy has
agreed with its European partners to inform him that Rome will
not recognize Moscow's declaration that it has annexed areas of
Ukraine occupied by Russian forces.
Ecological Transition Minister Roberto Cingolani said Sunday
that the sabotage of the Nord Stream 1 and 2 gas pipelines was
also set to be discussed with Razov.
The already high tension has increased further following
Russia's threats to use nuclear weapons in relation to the war
in Ukraine and the interruption of gas supplies to Italy from
Russia via the Trans Austria Gas Pipeline to Tarvisio at the
weekend.
It is the third time Razov has been summoned to the foreign
ministry in six months.
In April he was called to a meeting to be informed of the
expulsion of 30 Russian diplomats.
In June he was summoned to receive Italy's protests at
accusations of Russophobia directed at the Italian authorities
and media.
