Premier Giorgia Meloni said Wednesday
the government had approved more national production of natural
gas because "the time of nos at all costs is over.
"What Italy needs must be done and we want to help firms in
difficulty", she told the parliamentary caucuses of her Brothers
of Italy (FdI) party.
Meloni said another "priority issue" was curbing electricity and
gas price hikes amid the energy emergency sparked by the Ukraine
war.
"In two weeks," she said, "we have found 30 billion euros to
ease and cover the cost of bills".
But she added that "the game will be played above all at the
European level," with the approval of a long-awaited
pan-European gas price cap for which Italy has lobbied hard.
