A row has erupted in Italy over a
tweet on the Calabria migrant shipwreck that has claimed at
least 67 lives from a member of Premier Giorgia Meloni's
rightwing Brothers of Italy (FdI) party.
Veteran former conservative daily editor and FdI Lombardy
councillor Vittorio Feltri tweeted on the disaster that is
feared to have left over 100 dead: "I remind the non-EU migrants
of an old Italian saying: leaving is a little like dying. Stay
at home".
Feltri, 79, a former editor of Silvio Berlusconi's Il Giornale
daily and an editor of the rightwing Libero daily until he
retired two years ago, is known as a waspish conservative
commentator and provocateur.
The centre-left opposition Democratic Party (PD) slammed the
tweet with MEP Pina Picierno saying: "I flag up to Premier
Meloni that this vile tweet is from one of her members, elected
in Lombardy".
Another PD MEP, Pierfrancesco Majorino, centre-left Lombardy
councillor, called Feltri "unhuman and unsuited (for office)".
