Deputy Premier and Transport Minister
Matteo Salvini on Thursday urged the European Union to take
action against Austria over the restrictions to passenger and
goods traffic it has introduced on its side of the Brenner Pass
with Italy.
The Council should note the economic and environmental
non-sustainability of the situation at the Brenner (Pass), and
we urge the Commission to intervene as guardian of the Treaties
to restore the right to full freedom of circulation for all
European citizens," he said at an EU transport ministers'
meeting in Luxembourg.
"Either the free circulation of people and goods is valid for
all or the Treaties are worth a little less for some people,"
Salvini said, adding that "the Brenner corridor doesn't just
belong to Austria, Italy or Germany but is essential for the
whole of Europe".
Germany also called for action on the impasse Thursday.
