Germany is watching with concern the
situation on Lampedusa following the arrival of record numbers
of migrants and refugees by sea, a spokesperson for the German
interior ministry told reporters on Friday.
Spokesperson Steffen Hebestreit also confirmed that Berlin will
resume procedures to transfer asylum seekers from Italy under
the voluntary solidarity mechanism agreed at European level in
2022 when Rome reactivates the Dublin regulation stipulating
that asylum claims must be processed in the EU country of first
entry unless otherwise agreed.
"Germany is very supportive," Hebestreit added.
Italy is struggling to handle a very significant increase in sea
arrivals from Africa.
Many of the migrants and refugees arriving on its territory
intend to move on to other European countries further north.
