European Commission President Ursula
Von der Leyen on Thursday exhorted EU interior ministers meeting
in Brussels to reach an agreement on the new set of rules
governing migration and asylum within the bloc.
"In adopting proposals that are central to the Pact on Migration
and Asylum, I now strongly urge member states to reach an
agreement on the regulation of the crisis at today's meeting of
interior ministers," she said.
"We must now finish the job. We must ensure the proper
implementation of the Pact," she added.
Proposed by the European Commission in 2020, the New Pact on
Migration and Asylum aims to create a fairer, more efficient and
more sustainable migration and asylum process for the European
Union, with an emphasis on solidarity and responsibility sharing
among member states.
However, negotiations have been slow amid deep divisions within
the bloc about how to proceed, with strong opposition especially
from Hungary and Poland.
EU interior ministers are meeting on Wednesday to discuss
migration at the Home Affairs Council in Brussels.
