Premier Giorgia Meloni attacked
Italy's Constitutionally enshrined judicial autonomy in voicing
astonishment at a Catania judge striking down parts of the
government's migrant decree, ten members of the Supreme
magistrates Council (CSM), the judiciary's self-governing body,
said Monday.
The 10 or so CSM members have so far signed a petition to
protect Catania judge Iolanda Apostolico, who has drawn
government flak for not having confirmed the detention of three
Tunisian asylum-seeking migrants in a pre-removal centre (CPR),
ruling the migrant decree illegitimate in several parts.
The petition speaks of "fully fledged attacks on the autonomy of
the judiciary' coming from members of the majority and even from
the premier
The document also censures the "serious professional
delegitimisation" to which the magistrate has been subjected by
government members claiming she is biased against them because
of past social media posts against anti-migrant League leader
Matteo Salvini and in favour of migrant rescue NGOs.
