Nicola Fratoianni, the leader of the
opposition party Italian Left, on Friday called for "democratic
escorts" to protect demonstrators from police charges that he
said have "become systematic" under the right-centre government
of Premier Giorgia Meloni.
"It would be good if politicians, lawmakers and ordinary
citizens marched alongside young people in defence of freedom of
expression," said Fratoianni.
On Friday police charged demonstrators during pro-Palestine
marches in the Tuscan cities of Pisa and Florence.
Earlier this month police clashed with demonstrators in Rome
during a march for Ilaria Salis, a 39-year-old Monza school
teacher and antifascist militant facing up to 24 years in
Budapest for allegedly attacking two neo Nazis last February,
and in Naples and Bologna during protests against the allegedly
pro-Israel stance taken by state broadcaster Rai after a
contestant at the televised Sanremo Song Festival called to
"stop the genocide" in Gaza.
