Premier Giorgia Meloni's right-wing Brothers of Italy (FdI) party is set to come first in Italy in the European elections with 27.7% of the vote, according to a projection by Consorzio Opinio Italia for Rai television.
Before the elections Meloni said FdI was aiming to win around 26% of the vote, the same level it obtained in the 2022 general election that thrust her to power.
The opposition centre-left Democratic Party (PD) is set to come second with 23.7% and the opposition 5-Star Movement (M5S) third with 11.1%, according to the projection Within the ruling centre-right alliance, the projection puts Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani's Forza Italia (FI) on 10.5%, ahead of Transport Minister Matteo Salvini's League on 8%.
It is the first nationwide vote since the death last year of FI's founder, ex-premier Silvio Berlusconi.
The Green-Left Alliance (AVS) was on 6.6%, above the threshold of 4% needed to get MEPs elected.
Ex-premier Matteo Renzi's centrist SUE was on 4%, with another centrist group, former industry minister's Carlo Calenda's Azione, under the entry bar on 3%.
Mediaset's projection was similar with FdI on 27.5%, the PD on 23,8%, M5S on 11.2%, FI on 10.4%, the League on 8.5% and AVS on 6.7%.
However, the Mediaset projection had both SUE (3.9%) and Azione (3.2%) under the 4% threshold
