Arianna Meloni, the elder sister of
Premier Giorgia Meloni and coordinator of the secretariat of
their rightwing Brothers of Italy (FdI) party, told an Italian
newspaper Saturday that she had broken up with her husband of
over 20 years, Farm Minister and FdI bigwig Francesco
Lollobrigida, some time ago.
'Yes, it's true, we haven't been together for a while," Meloni,
49, told liberal conservative daily Il Foglio, confirming
rumpours she had split from 52-year-old Lollobrigida, with whom
she has two daughters and whom she was with since 2000.
"For Lollo I'd throw myself into the Tiber, as they say in Rome.
"We love each other, I know how valuable he is. Our political
project goes ahead, our personal relationships are still solid,
but then love is another thing".
Meloni, who is two years older than her sister, denied any
comparisons with late former three-time premier ane media mogul
Silvio Berlusconi who often complained of judicial persecution,
after Il Giornale, a conservative newspaper, claimed that "they
want to investigate Arianna Meloni" for alleged suspected
interference in public-sector appointments.
Meloni also rejected accusations of subsequent attacks on the
judiciary stemming from the allegation.
"If anything, the attack is against a certain kind of journalism
that continually pulls me into the picture by describing me as
having been grappling with appointments and power plots for two
years," she told Il Foglio.
"This demeans me."
