Italian authorities will manage a formally illegal pro-Palestinian march in Rome Saturday "with balance", Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi said Friday.
Marchers have been banned from worsening tensions ahead of the October 7 anniversary of the horrific Hamas attacks on Israel but have insisted they will go on with the event to voice solidarity with Gaza and its high civilian toll in the Israeli war of reprisal.
"Tomorrow's pro-Pal demonstration in Rome is illegal and will in any case be managed with balance by our police forces, in whom I trust blindly," said the minister.
"Not all the demonstrators will take to the streets: a very representative group of the Palestinian world has accepted the ban as an invitation to reschedule the march on Saturday 12 October, because it is clear that on the eve of 7 October and for the way it was proposed there was a strong risk that it would be a celebration of a massacre and a harbinger of disturbances in the streets".
