A summit on Italy's
so-far-legally-stymied and controversial scheme to run migrant
processing centres in Albania ended with the conviction that the
government can go ahead with it on the basis of a recent ruling
from the supreme Court of Cassation that it is up to national
governments to decide which countries are safe for repatriation,
Premier Giorgia Meloni's office at Palazzo Chigi in Rome said
Monday.
Chigi issued a statement saying: "Also in light of the recent
ruling of the Court of Cassation that indicated the competences
relating to the identification of countries of safe origin at a
national level, the summit reiterated the firm intention to
continue working, together with EU partners and in line with the
Conclusions of the European Council of 19 December, on the
so-called 'innovative solutions' to the migratory phenomenon".
