Italy must get more women into
science, Premier Mario Draghi said on a visit to the Gran Sasso
nuclear physics lab Wednesday.
Too few girls, only one in five, choose STEM subjects, he said.
Draghi said the government would put one billion euros into
boosting science teaching and bring that percentage up to 35%.
"Realizing the full potential of research means banking on those
who are often on the sidelines of this world: women," said the
premier.
"For too long the top positions in scientific research have been
reserved for men.
"We must overcome gender stereotypes".
Some 30 billion euros of the 200 billion euro EU-funded
post-COVID National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP) would be
put into education and research, Draghi said, and the sector
would be put "at the centre of growth".
He said "we must foster international collaborations, of which
these laboratories are a virtuous example, and promote the
culture of merit".
Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS) is the largest
underground research center in the world.
Situated below Gran Sasso mountain in central Italy, it is well
known for particle physics research by the National Nuclear
Physics Institute (INFN).
