Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said
Friday he hoped the rest of the EU would follow Italy's lead in
testing arrivals from China for COVID-19 amid a surge in cases
in the Asian country.
"Italy always manages to be in the vanguard when it comes to
health protection and I hope the EU will follow Italy's example"
said Tajani outside the Montecitorio parliament building to
reporters questioning him about the newly mandatory swabs for
those arriving from China by plane, after Spain followed Rome's
lead.
Tajani reiterated that "there is no punitive intent towards the
Chinese passengers, but only to protect everyone, starting with
those who undergo the swab. Whoever comes is welcome and it is
normal that there are controls. I hope the EU will listen to us
as it listened to us in 2020," when Italy was the first EU
country to go into lockdown.
