Italy's Andrea Vendrame on Friday won
the 19th stage of the Giro d'Italia, a big mountain stage ending
at Sappada in Friuli after a solo breakaway that left the pink
jersey group 16 minutes adrift.
The 29-year-old from Conegliano in Veneto broke away from the
field on the 157km leg from Mortegliano to Sappada.
Two time Tour de France winner and two-time runner up Tadej
Pogacar of Slovenia kept the leader's pink jersey.
Pogacar, 25, who won the 2020 and 2021 Tours and came second the
next two years to Dane Jonas Vingegaard, and who is aiming to
become the first rider to do the Giro-Tour double since the late
Marco Pantani in 1998, faces the last big mountain stage
Saturday before Sunday's crowning stroll around Rome.
The Slovenian 'cannibal' has said his lead is big enough for him
to save some energy ahead of his Tour bid.
