After claiming its best ever medal
tally in the Rome European athletics championships Italy now
wants to beat its Tokyo Olympic haul of 10 golds, 20 silvers and
40 bronzes at next month's Games in Paris, Italian Olympic
Committee (CONI) President Giovanni Malagò said Thursday.
At the Olimpico the Azzurri beat the record they set for medals
won at Split in 1990, claiming 24 medals: 11 gold, nine silver
and four bronze.
"In Paris we not only want to but also can break the Tokyo
record," said Malagò.
"We want to stay in the world top ten and remain the leading
nation in Europe".
"The Italian model is multi-disciplinary, and for many in the
world it is an object of study, an example," added Malagò, who
thanked President Sergio Mattarella for his presence at the
championships:
"He gave us two wonderful evenings at the Olympic Stadium that
the athletes honoured as never before", Malagò said the ceremony
to present the tricolour to the athletes of Italy who will
compete at the Paris Games, in the gardens of the Quirinale.
