Italy's Jasmine Paolini's surprising
run at Wimbledon continued Sunday after American Madison Keys
retired hurt late on in a hard-fought last 16 clash in a
tournament where the Italian French Open finalist has previously
not won a match.
World number 13 and former US Open finalist Keys, 29, had been
3-6 7-6 (8) 5-2 up on Paolini when the American pulled her left
hamstring.
"It's bad to end the match like that, I'm a little bit happy but
sad for her, it's hard to win like that," said the Lucca-born
28-year-old, whose mother has Polish, Danish, and Ghanaian
roots.
"I love this court and I hope I've become a crowd favourite,
thanks to all the Italians who are here, grazie ragazzi".
Paolini, who lost to world number one Iga Swiatek of Poland in a
one-sided Roland Garros final, will now play either Croatia's
world number 37 Donna Vekic or Spain's world number 113 Paula
Badosa in her first Wimbledon quarter final.
Vekic is currently leading that last 16 tie.
