Pope Francis was "saddened" to learn
of the death of former US President Jimmy Carter and offered his
"heartfelt condolences" in a telegram of condolence signed by
Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin, the Vatican said
Monday after Carter died aged 100 Sunday.
"Recalling President Carter's firm commitment, motivated by a
profound Christian faith, to the cause of reconciliation and
peace among peoples, the defense of human rights and the
well-being of the poor and needy", the Pontiff "entrusts him to
the infinite mercies of Almighty God and prays for the
consolation of all those who mourn his passing", said the Holy
See.
