German Vice-Chancellor Sigmar
Gabriel said Thursday that "you can't simply close the Brenner
(Pass) and tell the Italians see what you can do". He said there
was a danger of the Mediterranean once more becoming a graveyard
and stressed that Italy "can't be left alone". Austria has
threatened tough border controls and even possibly a fence at
the Brenner Pass should migrant flows through Italy from North
Africa surge as they are expected to do.
