All Italians living in Israel or who
are in the country on a temporary basis have been contacted said
Deputy Premier and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani after the
surprise rocket attack launched by Hamas from the Gaza Strip on
Saturday morning.
"All the Italians in Israel have been contacted," Tajani told
reporters at the Mermec (former Ferrosud) plant in Matera,
Basilicata.
"There are about 18,000 who live in Israel, some even have dual
nationality. And there are 250 who are in Israel temporarily and
there are about 20 Italians in the Gaza Strip," he added.
At least 20 people are known to have died and over 300 are
reported to have been injured after Hamas fired at least 5,000
rockets from Gaza into central and southern Israel, including
the cities of Tel Aviv and Jerusalem.
Dozens of Hamas fighters also entered Israeli territory from the
Strip using paragliders or from the sea.
