Premier Giorgia Meloni told EU
leaders in a video-conference on the Israel-Hamas war Tuesday
that the EU should not fall into Hamas's trap of trying to
derail the Abraham Accords normalisation process between Arab
countries and Israel.
The Abraham Accords are bilateral agreements on Arab-Israeli
normalization signed between Israel and the United Arab Emirates
and Bahrain on September 15, 2020, with other countries
hopefully to follow.
"Hamas's attack appears aimed at preventing the process of
normalisation started with the Abraham Accords, a trap into
which Israel and all of us must avoid falling into," Meloni told
the extraordinary meeting of the European Council.
She said she had been "struck by the ferocity of the images in
Israel and Hamas's attempt to dehumanise Israeli citizens".
She also stressed the importance of "returning to reasoning in
terms of long-term solutions to the Israeli-Paletinian question,
resuming the question of two peoples and two States, which must
have as its premise mutual recognition and Israel's right to
existence and defence".
