There is a risk of newly radicalised Islamists taking revenge after a Gaza hospital was bombed Tuesday killing up to 500 people, Defence Minister Guido Crosetto said Wednesday.
Hamas has blamed an Israeli airstrike while Israel says the hospital was hit by a misfired Islamic Jihad rocket.
"An incident like the one in the hospital can lead maybe 5, 10, 100 people to think they have to avenge something that we may not even know who caused it and this is unpredictable," Crosetto said after a meeting in Qatar with Emir Sheikh Tamim "The secret services, the Italian security services have monitored all the people at risk of extremism in recent years, but unfortunately, as the events in Belgium have shown and demonstrate, thousands of people arrive every day and among these thousands of people there can be anyone." An Islamist killed two Swedes in Brussels Monday ahead of a Belgium-Sweden Euro 2024 qualifier.
Last week another Islamist killed a French teacher at Arras.
