A Palestinian woman has given birth
to a girl on Italy's Gaza hospital ship calling the little girl
Italia in gratitude for her treatment aboard.
Ridana, 23, boarded the Vulcano in an Egyptian port 50 km south
of the Strip just before Christmas in order to get treatment for
one of her two girls who had been injured in Israeli bombing.
Medics soon realised she was heavily pregnant and took her to
the pregnancy ward where she gave birth to her third daughter
and immediately called her Ilin Italia.
"Life stubbornly makes its way between hatred and violence,
welcome little Ilin, born in the embrace of our tricolour," said
Defence Minister Guido Crosetto, saying she was "a sign of
hope", while Deputy Premier and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani
said "it's good news amid the Palestinian drama, and the woman
decided to call the girl Italia to thank our military staff who
helped her to be born".
