Hungary's penitentiary service on
Tuesday rejected as "calumny" claims reported in the Italia
media by a former cellmate of Ilaria Salis that her Budapest
jail conditions were marked by bed bugs, rats, maltreatment and
the use of chains.
Italy has protested to Hungary after Salis, a 39-year-old
elementary school teacher and antifascist who risks 24 years in
jail for allegedly attacking two neoNazis in February last year,
after she was led into court on a chain with hand and feet
shackles Monday.
The jail service, which is under the supervision of the
Hungarian interior ministry, said Salis's former cellmate Carmen
Giorgio's allegations were "false and the prison organisation
rejects them forcefully".
It said it was "sad" that the claims had been reported in the
Hungarian and Italian media without hearing from the other side.
