Defence Minister Guido Crosetto said
Wednesday Elon Musk's SpaceX company had useful capabilities for
the Italian defence sector, stressing there would be
national-security safeguards in the event of any possible future
deal to use the Starlink satellite system.
"Space X has 6,700 satellites in low orbit with a forecast that
they will become 42 thousand: it is an operator that has the
requirements to provide capabilities and services to Defense,
but this does not exclude that a sovereign and technologically
advanced country like ours can manage this data with proprietary
equipment and technologies to further protect national
interests," said Crosetto.
"Should the government opt ;;for commercial solutions, Defense
will activate a technical panel to examine in depth the
existence of the necessary requirements to satisfy the needs of
the military instrument".
Premier Giorgia Meloni has branded reports of a SpaceX deal with
Italy as "ridiculous".
