The European Commission on Thursday
sent to Rome a letter marking a step forward in the infringement
procedure against Italy for failure to comply with the
Bolkestein Directive regarding Italian bathing establishment
concessions.
The Bolkestein Directive is an EU law aiming to create a single
market for services within the EU. The directive requires EU
countries to ensure fair competition and transparency in order
to avoid any kind of discriminatory practices that could
undermine the single market principle.
Brussels wants Rome to assign bathing establishment concessions
by tender, a move Italy has so far resisted.
Thursday's letter contained the EU executive's reasoned opinion
on the case, a step towards a full-blown infringement procedure.
